MONDAY NIGHT RECAP: IT'S A LOCK, SMITH.
Few players in football can singlehandedly change a game. However, when the few that can are in their zone, it's impossible to stop them. Regardless of record, or opponent, or even the rest of the team, that player can decide the outcome of the game on his very own. One of those special players is Steve Smith. After being a relatively unheralded draft pick out of Utah going 74th overall, Smith has evolved into one of the few players in the league that a defense has no answer for. Outside of LaDainian Tomlinson, Smith is the only player that has a threat to score every time he touches the football. A double team is just another obstacle for Smith to overcome. He's been overcoming them his whole career. If it's not a defense, it's a devastating injury following a Super Bowl season that costs him and his team another shot at the title. If it's not injury, it's being called Super Bowl favorites and starting off 4-4. Each is just another obstacle though for Smith because he knows that as long as he is on the field, no one can stop him.
Steve Smith- The Panthers star WR showed why he is still the best WR in football on Monday night. Despite being sick and throwing up in a garbage can several times, Smith still finished with 149 yards and a TD. While he's not on pace for as many TDs and yards and last season due to the injury, if you take his numbers over the 7 games he did play and put them over a 16 game season, he would be on pace for 1783 yards and 9 TDs. The addition of Keyshawn Johnson has helped him greatly, and Smith remains one of the best WRs in football.
Jake Delhomme- Much like the Panthers, Jake Delhomme got off to a very slow start, but was able to finish strong and put up some very solid numbers. His final line was 240 yards 2 TDs and 1 INT. The fact that Delhomme only has 10 TDs is very discouraging, but Carolina is a second half team, so he should finish with 20 plus. Expect one of his better days next week against St.Louis.
Deshaun Foster/DeAngelo Williams- Carolina won the game, but it was clearly not because of the way they ran the football. To be fair Tampa's rush defense had something to to with this, but RBs with more talent would have done a better job. Neither RB has really emerged as a better option, so until that happens Foster will get the majority of the carries with Williams sprinkled in a few drives a game.
Bruce Gradkowski- It just appears that Gradkowski is not the option at QB for Tampa Bay. He played very poorly missing several opportunities for big plays by throwing bad passes. He finished with 173 yards passing 1 TD and 2 INTs. The Bucs are done this season and will try to assess what they have for the future. Don't be surprised if they give Luke McCown a look later on.
Cadillac Williams- It has been such a disappointing season for the Bucs first round pick from two years ago. Last night he had 15 carries for 44 yards. He has only had over 4 yards per carry twice all season. He also has only topped 50 yards rushing three times in 9 games. In addition to those stats, he also only has 1 TD. He's a total bust this season and things don't look like they will be turning around because Tampa has a very difficult schedule ahead.
Joey Galloway- The Bucs WR tossed in another solid performance with 87 yards receiving. He showed that he was the only player worthy of starting in fantasy on the Bucs. If Galloway had a good QB, he could be having one of the best seasons for WRs, so it's impressive enough that he has 562 yards receiving and 4 TDs with Gradkowski behind center.
